Director's note

I let you think you know the story. Then the cut proves you wrong.

I'm Raghvendra Joshi.

  1. Mechanical engineer
  2. VFX artist
  3. Editor & DOP

I'm a mechanical engineer who turned to VFX. Then the story evolved. I fell in love with the single frame, and that led me to cinematography and film editing.

As a DOP, I decide what you feel inside the frame. As an editor, I decide how that feeling changes in post. I've edited web series, short films, micro-dramas, brand films, ads and vertical content, and I'm in love with narrative style.

Editing is where the story gets rewritten.

The Wide Cut

What I learned behind the camera

To develop a character, there has to be a story behind them, and every frame that carries that story has to be lit and executed properly.

Don't move the character to suit the light. Move the light to suit the character. Every change in light tone changes how a character reads, and multiple angles give you room to reveal them or hide a cut.

What I felt

I started this series before I really understood filmmaking. As the series grew, I grew with it as an editor.

It taught me that the cut decides who a character is. An angle, a reaction, a few extra seconds held on a face can make someone look beautiful, dull or dangerous. I learned to build a character and pull the emotion out of a scene, so the audience knows who is good before anyone says it.

What I learned behind the camera

When an actor's face can tell the story on its own, go close. Then cover it from multiple angles, so the edit has somewhere to cut.

Happy Birthday

ShotEdited

A man's special day takes a dark turn as secrets from his past come to light.

What I felt

My first film as both DOP and editor. I never thought I'd end up in filmmaking, and then I did it.

It also showed me what a committed actor looks like. For one fall, Vikram Joshi went down twelve times to give me the take.

From the edit

My most commercial cut. A fast, dark story built on pace. It all clicked at the end, but the whole time I was editing it I had a strange feeling I couldn't shake.
